Hilarious, truthful, poignant and raw...stories unfolded on the spot with words, movement and sound. Totally unique theatre packed with powerful imagery and a
comically surreal undertow...Based on the life of an ultra sensitive girl in a hyper-yang world before anti-depressants were cool. A different show every night
because every night is improvised before your eyes!

I have seen three of Nell Weatherwax's "And I Am Not Making This Up" shows and loved every one. Each was unique. Each was a pleasure.
I wrote in more detail about my most recent experience of her work on my blog, www.IndyTheatreHabit.com. Here

I respect anyone's right to have a different opinion from mine. I'm just saying...I really love Nell's work.

I love Nell Weatherwax and her show! I've seen her more than once and every time I've been moved to tears and laughter. She takes us on a ride, and at
the end of it we've learned about her and about ourselves. She is a master.

I have studied improv comedy at Second City Theater in Chicago, performed and taught improv for over a decade all over the country, and I have NEVER seen
anything like the shows that Nell Weatherwax does. She tells true stories about her own life using an unusual combination of movement (she studied mime,
clowning, dance), sound effects (from the gutteral to the cartoonlike), and words (she has the poet's ability to capture entire scenes in crisply formed
unusual metaphor...example "Conversation with him was like a verbal Escher"), and she jumps back and forth between these three streams until you
don't know what to expect. It is as if her mind was a camera and her words and sounds and body are a 3-D movie projector and she recreates her experiences
so forcefully that I was again and again driven to tears and laughter. When she talks about sex, she talks about real sex between real people, not romance or
porn fantasies. When she talks about death or alcoholism or...

I have seen Nell Weatherwax's work numerous times and each show calls to the heart in a different way. There are funny shows, sad shows, insane shows,
(well, maybe not as many of those as I'd like to see), shows that have more physical movement, shows that have more linear story. Her work is
truthful and impels audiences toward recognizing shared threads of human experience. This is not something we've come to expect at theatres. That's
too bad. Thank you, Nell, for another wonderful surprise!

Interesting...

As a playwright, I was sort of fighting Nell with the improved/structure nature of her piece. But, as an audience member, I found her fascinating and she
pulled me past my own rules into a new type of theatre I'd yet to experience. Having never been to see "story telling," I wasn't sure what to
expect. And with the addition of movement and her naked candor with the audience and her technician, it was kind of liberating to set aside my thoughts on what
theatre "should" be and relish the thought of theatre actually is: artist and audience. Period. I witnessed something that no one else will ever see.
They might see something similar. They see parts of what I saw. And while I know ALL theatre is of this nature... nothing is quite like Nell. At least nothing
I've experienced to date.

So, YAY! Kudos for being so open and honest and freakish enough to make me split my head open a little wider and make room for a different take on an art form
I...
